Falcon is Slacked's newest dedicated server, hosted at AwkNet Communications.

Falcon is running on an Athlon 64 @ 2 GHz with 2 GB RAM, it is located at the Telecom Center in downtown LA. It was previously located two blocks away at the Aon Center.

Falcon hosts:

  • Network statistics
  • SVN for Z and other projects
  • Various websites for our users, including RMXP.org
  • Pluto, and some other eggdrops
  • indra
  • Public stratum 2 time server (ntp.slacked.org)

The beginning

Due to dissatisfaction with the service provided by Staminus the network administration decided to acquire a replacement server. Eventually AwkNet was chosen as the new host and over the course of March and April 2007 the data was moved from twilight to falcon.

Web hosting on falcon

In order to ensure sufficient funding for the networks infrastructure, the administration agreed to expand the use of falcon to include web hosting. Unused bandwidth and system resources would essentially be sold and the revenue would be used to contribute to the networks nontrivial hosting bill. The web hosting service provided would naturally be more informal than most and would not include any kind of SLA.

As a result of this decision, falcon began hosting RMXP.org in April 2007. Unfortunately, the resource intensive nature of the site led to degraded performance. The culprit turned out to be a shortage of RAM - as a result the RAM was later bumped up to 2 GB.

Other services on falcon

Falcon also provides a public stratum 2 NTP time server for public use. It is currently included in the NTP pool project, within the US zone.

The future

Originally, Slacked planned to retire falcon in January/February 2008, however this was complicated when it became clear that finding a host for RMXP would be more difficult than previously anticipated. As a result, falcon was given a reprieve and will most likely be operational until May at least.

Slacked still plans to merge its two dedicated servers in order to reduce costs, however these plans are very fluid and subject to change.
