The Start - 2004

Slacked.org was not actually originally intended to be an IRC network, but was going to be a developer community ran by shadow and FoZ. Slacked actually developed a tabbed FTP client called SlackFTP, but we never did finish it. The idea of a developer community was very short-lived due to lack of time and interest.

I (shadow) started using the domain for an IRC server in late 2004, but it wasn't yet an independent network. Slacked was linked to ElitistFaction and Voltnet (both of which no longer exist today). Most of Slacked's original users were from shadow's channel #Addicted on the WebChat network. After the demise of VoltNet, I started looking for someone to start the network off with. I couldn't start one on my own, and I didn't know anyone that was willing to help. One night on SearchIRC, I saw a post which got my interest:

Loser04 says:
hey, im looking for a good sized UnrealIRCd network running anope services,
in the 500 user range, warez not a big deal, I just want a big network to
start a channel on, servers must be sturdy!!!!!!! ...

Most people would say not to start a network with the first person you meet, but anyone that knows me knows... I'm not most people. Even though I was not running UnrealIRCd or had 500 users, I messaged Loser on AIM and we worked out a plan to start a new network. Slacked as we know it today was born on July 6, 2005. The IRCd was originally going to be bahamut, but Loser convinced me to use UnrealIRCd, which I've learned to tolerate.

The network saw immediate success, and grew quickly. The first servers were spider.slacked.org (hub), velocity.slacked.org, ironcross.slacked.org, oreoz.slacked.org, and dragon.slacked.org. The original crew were shadow, Loser, Oreoz, DragonVial, and reaper. The userbase was a combination of Loser's own friends, my friends from #Addicted, and some new users from SearchIRC.

Loser's role on the network was eventually replaced by Joe, who continues to be a major contributor to the network along with Shadow, Jamie, and Oreoz. We currently have an average of 40-50 users at a time, and hope to grow soon. We are home of channels like #RMXP and #Hive. On September 1st, 2006 Slacked switched from Unreal3.2 and Anope services to Inspircd and IRCServices, but later switched to charybdis due to a bug that sometimes prevented users from connecting. Slacked has suffered through more than its fair share of DDoS attacks, one mass-akill takeover, and many bot floods including the turkflood and pathetic french floodbots. Jamie developed a security service called Z (completely unique to Slacked) which has proven itself very capable in defending against numerous types of drones, clones, abusers, and other nasties.
