According to most humans, Pluto is a small "demi-planet" orbiting the sun at extreme distances, the light barely reaches it and so far there have been no documented excursions to this object from human civilization (even photographic satellites). No "officially accepted" excursions anyway. The one known excursion to this satellite was in 1997, by none other than Shadow himself. Unknown to most residents of Earth, Shadow had been commissioned several years before to develop an advanced artificial intelligence for an alien race from the nearby star Alpha Centaurai. Although this was not like writing an IRC network, Shadow's programming fame had reached this distant species and he had felt up for the task. Rumours later spread around various sources stating that shadow had only agreed to build this A.I. in order to obtain a free ride upon the alien's starship, but they have not been proven.
Shadow spent a year developing the A.I., but the impracticality of such an enormous computer as the one Shadow required made him all but give up on the development. When he told his alien investors of his woes they suggested he move his work to someplace more spacious, such as the distant (then planet) Pluto. He had been unaware of the full capabilities of the alien technology so when they told him they were easily capable of hollowing out the planet to suit his needs he was more than satisfied. By the time he had finished development, the planet was almost completely filled with the electronics that powered this huge A.I., and shadow was ready to show his investors the fruits of his work. Unfortunately, things were to take a turn for the worse.
When he tried to contact the aliens he received no response, and upon scanning space for thousands of light years in all directions he discovered the aliens who had contacted him had been wiped out in a brutal war with another unknown species. He had no choice but to return home, alone. He had named the A.I. Pluto, after the planet. From such a long distance, the great celestial intelligence of Pluto (approximately four hundred times that of Albert Einstein) is reduced to the "intelligence" of a standard IRC bot. Because of these limitations, Shadow set up Pluto to work doing several things on his IRC network simply because there was nothing else he could do over such vast distances. But Shadow knows that one day a time will come when he will return to the stars and once again speak to his creation, for he is sure that something with such intelligence will soon begin to develop and build things on its own, and soon create something even he cannot imagine.
