This is a detailed description of the Slacked IRC Network, and isn't necessarly written for users who are new to IRC. New users should refer to this article. Slacked was founded on Wednesday, July 6, 2005. Most of us were originally users of the WebChat IRC Network, whose opers had a reputation of abusing and being generally corrupt. Our intention was to create a network where the freedom and privacy of our users is not only respected, but enforced. Slacked is a great network for people looking for a smaller, more fun server, with an awful lot of potential.

Some Facts About Slacked

  • IRCD and Services: We proudly run charybdis with Atheme Services. This setup will be familiar to users of Sorcerynet.
  • Bot Policy: We do not allow warez bots on the network. Friendly bots are allowed, 3 connections per IP unless given special permission.
  • Security: We have developed our own security service called Z to fight against spammers and floodbots. More information on Z.
  • Privacy: We enforce strict privacy rules regarding users safety (no sharing or using of IPs). More on privacy.
  • Channels: We have a broad range of channels to choose from. The official channel is #Slacked, however the premiere chat channel (where most of the action is) is #Slackers.
  • Hostmasking: The first part of your host on Slacked is encrypted, so nobody knows your exact IP address. You can also request custom Vhosts for use on the network.

Why Should You Choose Slacked?

  • Great place to open a channel: Most people like how our friendly userbase is always willing to help out new channels. We can be as involved or as uninvolved as you want, it's up to you. We leave moderating your channel up to you, Slacked opers will not, and cannot override bans or keys in your channel and will always respect your privacy.

  • We give you control: Useful modes which make running your channel more efficient and more fun.

Let's Bust Some Myths

Opers will kill me if I'm annoying!

Slacked uses Kills and Z-Lines as a LAST RESORT. These are used when we've determined an offender is a threat to the network as a whole. Opers will not control what goes on in unofficial channels, but if someone chooses to be a brat in an official channel, we may issue a simple kick+ban. If someone is banned from the entire network, it's for a very good reason.

If I connect with my own IP, I will get DDoSed!

No. Hostmasking (+h) is enabled by default, so no users are able to see your IP. Opers are able to see your ip, but have to follow strict privacy rules regarding users' safety. As a rule, we do not give oper to people who are known to DDoS.

Opers will be able to see my secret (+s) room.

Opers cannot see channels which are set mode +s. We have no interest in joining any room uninvited unless we believe there is something illegal going on.

Slacked is just one big #Slackdev

I don't know where some people got this one from. Slacked is not affiliated with Slackdev, and only a small number of Slacked users are actually from Slackdev. We love them bunches, but they don't reflect the opinions or ideas of the Slacked IRC Network.
